Its wings flut- tered once or twice then it lay stiff on its back.įairchild stooped to pick it up, but the moment he touched it he jumped back with a cry of pain. Suddenly it spun violently and hit the ground. The parrot was flying in erratic circles. The only living thing was a large grey parrot. There was no game, not even the eternal flies and beetles. But when he stepped out of the jungle into the plain the wide expanse of grass and bush lay green and quiet under an over- cast sky. There was some unknown danger ahead, more for- midable than a leopard or gorilla, something which all the creatures feared, monkeys and worms alike.įairchild told himself this could only be fire. Monkeys, birds, vermin-were headed away from the grassy plain and to- wards the stream.
